UNDERSTANDING ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE WITHIN GOD’S INTELLIGENT DESIGN: BY DIRAN AVAGYAN

These days, many conferences, podcasts, lectures, and public discussions focus on AI and technological advancements, the threats, risks, and challenges they pose, as well as the opportunities they present. I try to follow as many as I can because I find them thought-provoking. Most recently, the President of the United States hosted a summit at the White House with the participation of top tech executives. During the summit, it was announced that the term “Artificial Intelligence” (AI) was being officially replaced with “Super Intelligence” (SI), stating that the technology is not actually artificial.

As I pondered these developments, as well as what is happening in Armenia with Firebird and NVIDIA building the region's largest AI factory, I realized that fear and resistance, although natural, are not helpful in dealing with what the future brings. This evolutionary process does not belong to the distant future. It is happening now, and hence, the questions, uncertainties, and fears belong to the present.

One of the greatest concerns I hear about the so-called “techno-utopia,” or what some describe as a “high-income society,” where people would no longer need to work, is the diminishing role of the human factor in virtually every sector, as human involvement is increasingly replaced by AI-driven automation.

What will happen to us, one may wonder? Will these advancements deprive us of one of our most fundamental human needs, namely, self-actualization? How does Artificial Intelligence fit into the Intelligent Design that we call creation, and where is God in all of this as the Creator of all?

I believe that evolution is inherent in creation and that God created humanity with a special meaning and purpose: to steward this world and become co-creators with Him. In Genesis 2:15, we read that God placed Adam in the Garden of Eden “to till it and keep it.” From the very beginning, humanity was entrusted not only with the responsibility to care for creation but also with the capacity to cultivate, develop, and transform it.

St. Basil the Great, in his homilies on creation, explains that God's command, “Let the earth bring forth,” was not confined to a single moment in time but became an enduring power within creation. As he writes, “This command has remained in the earth, and has not ceased to give it the power to bring forth and bear fruit.” Creation, therefore, is not static. It carries within itself the capacity for growth and transformation.

In this sense, technological progress can be understood as an expression of the creative spirit God has instilled in us. The moment we become inert and relinquish our responsibilities, we risk becoming redundant and replaceable. However, guided by the Spirit of the Lord, we can achieve self-realization and fulfill our God-given purpose by ensuring that technological advancement remains within the moral and ethical boundaries that serve humanity and honor its Creator.

As technology becomes increasingly intelligent, will we remain creative and grow more responsible?
