Centennial Celebration Reflected in Another Historic Picture

In 1927 the early pioneers of the Armenian Church in the West gathered with their priest, Fr. Adom Melikian, for a Fourth of July picnic at Elysian Park (Los Angeles) to celebrate life. One hundred years later, the Western Diocese has grown in the number of parishioners, churches, and geographic expanse, serving communities in the Western United States and Mexico.

On July 4, His Eminence Archbishop Hovnan Derderian, invited clergy and the faithful to re-enact the historic picture from 1927. Assembled against the backdrop of the St. Leon Ghevontiants Armenian Cathedral, the picture captured the Armenian Church in its current form as it bridges to the new century ahead.

Photographing this event is one of many programs organized by the Centennial Steering Committee to celebrate the Western Diocese's 100 years of mission and ministry. The entire program of the Centennial celebration events is forthcoming and will be unveiled on October 6 at the Western Diocese Clergy Conference.
