In its May 17, 1919, issue, the respected American periodical The Literary Digest published some of the earliest official figures concerning the Armenian population in the United States, reporting that approximately 70,000 Armenians were living in America at the time.
The publication also noted the high value Armenians placed on education, observing that those who had the opportunity to pursue higher education rarely passed it up.
Their aspiration, the article emphasized, was to become exemplary citizens in their new homeland—“better citizens in their new home.”
