Feast Of The Discovery Of The Girdle Of The Holy Mother Of God

And Mary said, “My soul glorifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has looked on the humble estate of his servant. For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed; for he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name.”

(Luke 1:46-49)

The Armenian Church celebrates the feasts dedicated to the Holy Mother of God with special love and spiritual joy. One of these is the Feast of the Discovery of the Girdle of the Holy Mother of God, which reminds us that through His grace, God sanctifies not only the lives of His saints, but also everything connected with their holy journey. For this reason, throughout the centuries, the faithful have shown deep reverence toward the relics and personal belongings of the Holy Mother of God. For us, they are not merely ancient objects, but living witnesses to the holiness with which God glorified His humble handmaid.

The true meaning of this feast, however, is not found in the sacred girdle itself, but in the spiritual beauty of the Holy Mother of God. Her greatness came not from earthly power, but from humility; not from human glory, but from her complete obedience to the will of God. That is why, in her hymn of praise, Mary does not speak of her own worthiness, but declares, “My soul magnifies the Lord.” Her entire life became an offering of praise to God.

Even today, the world teaches us to seek honor from others, to measure ourselves by our achievements, and to pursue recognition. But the Holy Mother of God reminds us that the greatest beauty of a person is a pure heart, and the greatest treasure is the grace of God. When a person humbly opens their heart to the Lord, God accomplishes great things through them. That is why all generations call the Blessed Virgin blessed, because her whole life belonged completely to God.

The Feast of the Discovery of the Girdle of the Holy Mother of God also calls us to rediscover the “girdle” that should bind our own lives together: faith, prayer, purity, and obedience. If we gird our hearts with these spiritual virtues, no trial will be able to separate us from God.

May this holy feast teach us to love and honor everything that brings us closer to God, and above all, to seek the faith, purity, and humility of the Holy Mother of God. And through her motherly intercession, may our hearts be filled with the grace of God, so that our lives may also become a living witness to His glory.
