The Western Diocese of the Armenian Church, under the leadership of Primate Archbishop Hovnan Derderian, successfully concluded its Altar Servants Leadership Program, a year-long educational and spiritual initiative dedicated to the ongoing formation of more than 250 deacons and altar servers throughout the Diocese.
Developed to deepen the theological understanding, liturgical knowledge, and pastoral awareness of altar servers, the program brought together scholars, clergy, and ministry leaders who guided participants through a series of sessions focused on the mission of the Armenian Apostolic Church.
Inspired by the model of servant leadership found in the Book of Acts (6:1–4), the program reflected on the role of deacons in the life of the early Church and its continued relevance today. As the apostles entrusted faithful servants to assist in the growing ministry of the Christian community, the modern ministry of the deacon likewise remains rooted in prayer, service, spiritual maturity, and leadership.
Held every other month, the program opened on June 14, 2025, with the first of two sessions led by Dr. Hratch Tchilingirian, who introduced participants to the rich spiritual heritage and mission of the Armenian Apostolic Church. Dr. Tchilingirian’s second session, held on August 23, expanded upon the Church’s relationship with other Christian traditions and highlighted the important role of the laity in preserving and advancing the mission of the Church.
On October 25, Hayk Madoyan presented an in-depth exploration of the Holy Bible, examining its historical formation, the Armenian biblical tradition, and the significance of the Classical Armenian “Grabar” translation. Participants also reflected on approaches to reading and studying Scripture in accordance with the teachings of the Church.
The fourth session, held on December 6, once again featured Dr. Tchilingirian, who guided participants through the theological understanding of time and space within the liturgical life of the Armenian Church. Through an examination of the liturgical calendar and cycles of worship, deacons gained a greater appreciation for the rhythm and spiritual meaning embedded within the Church’s sacramental life.
On January 24, 2026, Fr. Haroutiun Tachejian offered practical liturgical training centered on the Chalice Procession (Veraperoom) of the Armenian Divine Liturgy. The session examined the spiritual symbolism of the procession and its connection to Christ’s salvific journey, enriched through scriptural reflection and liturgical practice.
The sixth session, presented on March 21 by Fr. Vazken Movsesian, addressed ministry in the digital age. Participants explored the opportunities and challenges presented by modern technology and examined practical digital tools and hybrid ministry models for engaging parishioners across generations and communities.
The program concluded on May 23, 2026, with a pastoral ministry session led by Diran Avagyan. The presentation emphasized compassionate pastoral visitation as a sacred expression of ministry. Through reflection on presence, empathy, attentive listening, and spiritual discernment, participants considered how they are called to embody Christ’s compassion in their service to others.
Throughout the duration of the program, the deacons and altar servers of the Western Diocese were encouraged to strengthen both their spiritual lives and their commitment to ministry.
“The role of deacons and altar servers is vital in the worship, pastoral care, and communal life of our church communities,” said Archbishop Derderian. “We are meaningfully investing time, effort, and resources in the development of leadership at all levels throughout our Diocese.”
The second edition of this continuing Leadership Program series will begin in the fall.
