His name is Hrair Paze Khatcherian. For over a thirty years, Paze, (which means Hawk in Armenian), has been loyal to his namesake, keeping a keen eye on the distinct artifacts which are synonymous with the Armenian culture.
Khatchkars (cross-stones) have been Armenia’s gift to the world since the early fourth century. For over a quarter century, Hrair has travelled the world to capture the uniqueness of khatchkars, the essence of the Armenian spirit through a photographic lens. Khatcherian’s 15th album titled Khatchkar was presented at the Western Diocese of the Armenian Church of North America on Thursday, September 14, 2017.
The evening program, held at the Hampar Family Room, commenced with the Lord’s Prayer by the Rev. Fr. Khajag Shahbazyan. Welcoming remarks were delivered by the Rev. Fr. Nerses Hayrapetyan who introduced the author of Khatchkar, the world renowned photographer Mr. Hrair Khatcherian.
Thanking the Diocesan Primate, the reverend clergy and his audience, the “hawk” presented an informative slide show, describing the key features of khatchkars from various regions including historic Armenia (Western Armenia), Artsakh, the Republic of Armenia, Iran and Azerbaijan.
The artistic portion of the program included acapella performances of Komitas Vartabed’s Հով արեք (Make Breeze) and Լուսնյակ Գիշեր (Moonlit Night) by Ani Khachatryan.
In his closing remarks, the Diocesan Primate commended the invaluable cultural endeavor undertaken by Mr. Khatcherian. “You have dedicated your adult life to capturing and disseminating the riches of the Armenian culture. Indeed, the numerous sacrifices you have made have not gone unnoticed. On the contrary, through your unparalleled commitment of capturing and documenting the beauty and splendor of the Armenian culture, you have inspired thousands and have captivated audiences around the world. May God bless and protect you and your loved ones and grant you continued strength as you embark on new journeys in your profession,” said His Eminence.
The program concluded with the Primate’s prayer.
The guests received the opportunity to greet the author, acquire the book and enjoy a reception, organized by the Ladies Auxiliary under the leadership of Mrs. Cindy Norian.
