Last Sunday, the end-of-academic-year performance of a play based on the Armenian writer Hovhannes Tumanyan’s “Anush” poem has been performed at the Seattle Armenian School (a.k.a. Saint Harutyun College) by 3rd year students. The students have performed an adaptation of the tragedy “Anush” – an Armenian classical poem as well as a five-act opera composed by Armen Tigranian--on school’s stage, portraying the scenes of happiness, love, bitter male rivalry ending in sorrow, as well as reciting parts of the poem. The opera has special importance to Armenian musical history as one of its most significant accomplishments. The opera is about the tragedy of a peasant girl (Anush) whose short love affair ends in loss and death because of conflict between her lover (Saro) and her brother (Mossy).
This classical play has been staged with the help of the staff of the school and under the initiative and guidance of Father Vazgen Boyajyan, the Parish Priest at the affiliated Holy Resurrection Armenian Apostolic Church. The performance was supervised by the school’s principle Silva Ghazarian, vice-principle Greta Gabrielyan, Parents Committee Chair Anna Akopyan, teacher Anna Khachatryan and other staff members…
The performance was attended by the parents of the students and the school staff members and their relatives. It was very well received by the audience, and have created a very warm and memorable atmosphere.
Upon the completion of the performance, Father Boyajyan has congratulated the students and their parents with the performance and good academic year, and conferred his blessings and well wishes to the audience.
