His Beatitude Archbishop Mesrob Mutafyan Enters His Eternal Rest
Published - 8 March 2019

In a telephone conversation with His Holiness Karekin II, Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians, His Eminence Archbishop Aram Ateshian, Patriarchal Vicar of the Armenian Patriarch of Constantinople informed His Holiness about the passing of His Beatitude Archbishop Mesrob Mutafyan, Armenian Patriarch of Constantinople. The Armenian Patriarch of Constantinople entered his eternal rest at Holy Savior Armenian Hospital in Istanbul on March 8, 2019. He was 62.

His Beatitude was the 84th patriarch of Turkey's Armenian Orthodox community and succeeded Karekin II in 1998.

Patriarch Mutafyan, officially known as Mesrob II, began suffering from dementia in 2008. Archbishop Aram Atesyan was appointed to serve as Patriarchal Vicar, as Mesrob II had to withdraw from his duties due to his illness. However, he officially remained as patriarch and archbishop until his passing.
