On Sunday, January 13, 2019, the faithful of St. Mary Armenian Church of Costa Mesa received the episcopal blessings of His Eminence Archbishop Hovnan Derderian, Primate of the Western Diocese of the Armenian Church of North America and Mexico.

At the Holy Altar, the Primate was assisted by Archpriest Fr. Moushegh Tashjian, Pastor of St. Mary Armenian Church and the deacons.

In his sermon, His Eminence addressed the importance of the feast of the naming of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. "Today we celebrate the feast of the naming of Christ, our Lord. Furthermore, we, as followers of Christ and adherents of His teachings, celebrate our naming as Christians as well. We are called Christians when we renew our faith life, when we follow in the footsteps of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and when we practice His commandments" The Primate also called upon the faithful to remain steadfast in their ancestral Christian Faith and to cherish the sacred traditions of the Armenian Apostolic Church.

Following the Divine Liturgy, the Diocesan Primate presided over a Special Parish Assembly during which the parishioners voted to approve the proposed building project.
