The Armenian Church Youth Organization of the Western Diocese held its 55th Annual Sports Weekend on Memorial Day Weekend, May 24 - May 26. Participants came from all over the diocese on Friday to take part in the opening ceremony and the opening games of the weekend. On Saturday, the games continued which included basketball, volleyball, soccer, dodgeball, table tennis and backgammon. Also, for the first time in years, a three point contest was also conducted.
The Saturday lunch was prepared and served by Father Avedis Abovian as well as parent volunteers. Father Avedis also served tacos both Friday and Saturday for the participants. The Saturday night social at Dave & Buster's was a huge success with full participation from our athletes.
The Divine Liturgy on Sunday took place at St. Paul, Fresno with Celebrant Archbishop Hovnan Derderian. In the afternoon, the championship games featured the best teams competing for the first place prize in their respective sports. Finally, the banquet on Sunday featured DJ Diko entertaining a fully sold out room of athletes and parents. The champions were crowned and everyone danced the night away.
The ACYO-WD Central Council would like to thank all those who made this weekend possible. We would especially like to thank Archbishop Hovnan Derderian, Youth Director Father Avedis Abovian and parent coordinators and volunteers. The Central Council looks forward to seeing all of its members soon at upcoming events. Please mark your calendars for the 2020 ACYO Convention which will take place MLK Weekend at St. Leon Cathedral in Burbank.
